I am asked on a daily basis what is a Wiccan and a Witch? I answer to the best of my ability without defensive language or going on the attack. A few years ago, a friend gave me a framed piece that she had made with the following explanation. It is good and I use it in my life.
The Beliefs' of Wiccans'
Human beings are given a great responsibility.
We are given a large brain and a marvelous multi-function shell with which to fulfill the challange of our lives.
Our responsibility then, it to learn everything that we can while on the earth plane, living in the Mother's breast and living off of her bounty, Part of that learning must be that we are nothing without the Mother. If we do not regard ourselves as part of nature and her divinity, then humans continue to make the world a place of sorow, sadness, and wars.
There are two sides to being a Witch.
One is priviledge and the other responsibility.
To be a Wiccan is to be a person in control of your fauclties and your environment. Thus, you must have a strong reality concept, a concept of what it is all about, within which to work.
You learn that the craft is a most enjoyable way of spirituality, which also has serious moments of unbelievable joy when your work succeeds.
The best advice to be Wiccan is:
Build a belief system that fits what you know of reality,
then work within it to become everything you can.
Replace feelings of powerlessness with joy and happiness.
Find Love.
Make your own miracles work.
To me, being a Witch, is being in control of my life, my space, my home, my envirionment. I am working every single day to make my world better. Mentally, Spiritually, Physically. I recycle, I plant trees and flowers, I hang birdfeeders in my yard, I drive very little. I use less than 10 gallons of gas a month (Unless I have to leave town for something, I try to carpool with another going to the same place.) I read labels and buy envirionmentally safe cleaning products.
These are things that I chose to do. The daily labor of a Witch is not much different that anyone else. We just chose to do it in a resposible way. Taking responsibility for my own actions. I take ownership of the words I speak. I am practicing being silent and not adding to the cycle of negativity that my be sent toward my. I step aside and let it pass. Knowing full well that what I do will return to me, I chose NOT to have negative in my life.
This is the shorthand explanation of what being a Witch/Wiccan means to me. There is more to my life now than I ever thought possible. If you want to learn more then read everything you can by authors such as Laurie Cabot, Ellen Dugan, Dorothy Morrison, Edain McCoy, andChris Penziak. There are dozens more but these will help you understand and learn.
I am proud to be a Witch. I wear my pentagram in plain sight and never hesitate to say yes when I am asked if I am a Witch.
Blessed Be to All

I agree, we do need to show normalcy as best as possible.
TitaniaThat we can act like adults and an asset to sociaty not an irritation. Even back before xtians, that behavior was not normal. It was brutle then.
